A Wake And Dean Limed Oak Console Table Or Desk from 1951. Classic 1950’s design with two drawers to the frieze, standing on square sectioned legs with delicate chamfers. Ideal as a desk, hall or console table. Stamped to base.  Dimensions:  100cm wide x 50cm deep x 81cm high. Height below drawers is 51cm.

Henry Wake established a business c.1800 producing school slates framed in wood in a workshop in Borough Road, Elephant & Castle, London. The slate came from a quarry in Wales owned by the Wake family. He soon expanded his manufacture to build simple school desks. In about 1820 he was joined by his uncle, John Dean, and thereafter the business was known as Wake & Dean. In 1850 Charles Frederick Wake Snr also joined the firm and around this date a move was made to larger, nearby premises at 110 London Road, which comprised workshops and showrooms. 

In 1890 Wake & Dean Ltd was formed, with a capital of £20,000 and the Wake family retained control of the company and by 1919 output was £3,000-4,000 per month and the workshops had been extended. In 1925 the private company was converted into a Public Limited Company with a capital of £130,000 increasing to £300,000 in 1936. Turnover doubled between 1919 and 1928, and again over the next 6 years, during which the firm introduced the ‘Pedigree’ and ‘Victory’ domestic ranges of furniture. From 1930 it took a stand at the annual Furniture Exhibition at Olympia, London. The firm remained in existence until at least 1953.
