An Italian Alabaster Bust of A Girl Circa 1880-1910
An exquisite Italian alabaster bust of a young maiden wearing a bonnet, with painted highlighted detail. Good contrast of colour and fine detail. Beautiful carving to the bonnet and dress especially the lace detail. The dress with it’s puffed sleeve and beautifully etched flowers. The flowing hair which frames the girls face shows how the sculptor has captured the flow and form of his sitter. I would say this well-executed bust was created by an accomplished sculptor of the period but I can not find any signatures, monogram or studio stamps. More images available.
Dimensions: 38cm high x 36cm wide
Condition: Good colour. Small damage to the tip of her nose, rather a scuff than a breakage. The bottom centre of her dress looks like it has a fracture or crack but on closer inspection, it appears that this is just the formation of the alabaster which is a translucent form of gypsum or calcite. Various scuff marks to the arms but purely commensurate of age.
