Description

A characterful domed-top travel trunk, probably late 19th to early 20th century, in the Victorian vernacular saddler tradition. A wood carcass is bound in tan leather with black metal strapwork and corner patches, all secured with domed brass studs that form decorative borders and heart motifs to the front, and the initials J+H to the lid. Iron drop handles are fitted to the sides and an iron lock plate sits beneath the front hasp. Inside, the trunk retains its original decorative paper lining together with a printed maker’s label reading “Arthur Wannop, Saddler, Trunk & Harness Maker, Brampton,” as photographed. The generous scale and domed profile give useful storage and strong visual presence; ideal as a hallway blanket box, end-of-bed chest or log box.
Age-related wear to the leather and mounts lends an attractive, honest patina consistent with travel and long service.
